My interest in medicine began in college when I got a part-time job as an orderly in a hospital. I had already taken a lot of science courses, but took the classes I needed to qualify for medical school. My plan was to become a family doctor like the ones who took care of our family and relatives.
After graduation from college I was offered a high-school teaching position, first as a Latin teacher, and then into a variety of science courses. Time went by, and after our two kids came along, I abandoned my dream of becoming a physician and continued teaching and then moved into sales.
As the kids became older and close to leaving the nest, I realized the doctor-dream would not go away. I started back to school in the evenings at Schoolcraft Community College. I continued to work during the day and took more courses at Eastern Michigan University. At age 50 I was accepted to the American University of the Caribbean in St. Maarten. I finished my last two years of medical school at Providence Hospital in Detroit. I received a Family Medicine residency position at Clinton Memorial Hospital in Wilmington, Ohio, where I graduated in June of 2003.
Over the years, through calling on hundreds of doctors and seeing medical care through the eyes of my family and friends, I've developed a pretty good idea of the doctor I want to be (and do not want to be). I've seen my parents get old and die, helped raise kids and grandkids, and been married for over 40 years and feel that I have something to contribute to medicine. Despite the science and technology involved, good medicine involves listening to people, feeling empathy, and trying to translate the complexities of diseases, medical tests, and procedures to a wide variety of patients and their families.
I am proud to be a Family Doctor and am trying to continue the healthcare approach of a generation ago, where the family doctor was the coordinator of each family member's health care. The goal of our office staff is to treat people warmly, maintain good communications, and provide good service. I also keep up to date with current medicine. Our patients can be assured that, if they are ill, we will see them promptly - often on the day they call.
I would like to say that our office runs a tight schedule and no one ever has to wait. As much as I don't ever want to keep patients waiting, I also know that life is not that simple. People often have complex problems that do not neatly fit into a 15-minute visit. As a result, our schedule sometimes suffers. I can only assure patients and their families that I will give them the same attention when their turn comes. We should also be able to provide more timely, personal, and cost-effective care than an emergency room or urgent-care clinic.
